“What did you (re)learn about yourself?”
We ask this question at the end of every Bright Morning team meeting, and it always teaches me something.
- I’ve learned…that there are always more options than I initially thought; I’ve learned that I can give skillful feedback; I’ve learned that disappointing people is not the end of the world.
- I’ve relearned…that self-knowledge is the starting point for effective leadership; I’ve relearned that there’s no right-or-wrong, there’s only how I’m showing up and engaging; I’ve relearned that trusting others begins with trusting myself.
You can use this question in any space where learning happens:
- At the end of a challenging coaching conversation
- After a team meeting or professional learning session
- Following a difficult day in the classroom
- Even after an informal exchange that left you thinking
How to Use It
1️⃣ Ask it regularly. Consistency builds reflection into your culture.
2️⃣ Answer it out loud. Don’t just think or write your response—say it. When you give voice to your insights, new meaning emerges.
3️⃣ Ask it together. Pair with a trusted colleague or peer and take turns listening and holding space for each other’s reflections.
Why It Matters
Self-knowledge drives effective leadership, strong teams, and Transformational Coaching.
And yet, it’s often the piece we skip when we’re focused on outcomes or problem-solving.
When we pause to ask, “What did I learn about myself?” we build the muscle of awareness—an essential ingredient for resilience and growth.
