Three Steps to Better Decision-Making
March 17, 2025

You’ve probably heard the saying, “The only constant in life is change” (Heraclitus).Â
‍
What is often unsaid is that every change we experience necessitates decision-making. And how prepared we are to navigate those moments is an X factor of leadership. Â
‍
Leadership lesson: Decision-making moments are pivotal opportunities to build (or break) trust. Â
‍
A Google search will tell you that educators make (at least!) 1,500 decisions a day. That’s in a normal school year. Add in 4+ years of uncertainty and change due to the pandemic and the increasing weaponization of the education system, and that number skyrockets.Â
‍
Two thoughts emerge from this reflection for me:Â
- Educators are remarkableÂ
- Building decision-making muscles must be a top priority
‍
If you’re motivated to grow in this area, here are three resources that will help you do so:Â
- Chapter 8 of The Art of Coaching Teams dives deep into all things decision-makingÂ
- My Feedback on Decision-Making Process tool (from Chapter 8) can be used as a diagnostic assessment to help you pinpoint where to focus your development efforts  Â
- The Art of Coaching Teams workshop will allow you to explore different approaches to decision-making, analyze scenarios and leave with a vetted process to support a decision your team will need to make in the near futureÂ
‍
If strengthening your leadership and team wasn’t motivation enough, prioritizing our decision-making development will benefit every area of our lives. That’s a return on investment that’s hard to argue with.
