This is the first of a four-episode Hot Topics in Coaching for Equity mini-series. In this episode, Elena is joined by Bright Morning teammate, Nick Cains. The two discuss how you coach for equity, when even using the word “equity” is prohibited. Elena shares six steps you can take today.

Episode Reflection Questions:
- What matters most to you about teaching, coaching and/or leading for equity? What are you willing to risk?
- Who is, or could be, a part of your coalition? Who else shares your commitment to teaching/coaching/leading for equity that you can work alongside?
- Knowledge is power. What, specifically, is your relevant local context?
- Your sense of purpose provides you with a much needed anchor in times of turmoil. What is your purpose in life? What legacy do you want to leave?
- How strong is your skillset in talking about equity, racism, and injustice? Are you able to build relationships in which conversations about equity can take place? Can you facilitate conversations that provoke reflection? Can you coach the emotions that inevitably come up in conversations around equity?
- Are you able to “coach up”? What is your current capacity to support those with positional power who are making critical decisions, or feeling like they have to implement decisions they might not agree with?
